India
in the Era of
Globalization
Coordinator: Dr Deb Kusum Das
In our everyday life while reading the newspaper or while trying to form an opinion, we come across the phenomenon
loosely described as globalisation/liberalisation. How does this phenomenon affect our lives? Why did
we choose this path of development? What has been the experience of other people in the world whose economies
have chosen this path? If it is such a good thing, why are
large sections of people across the world so opposed to it (as
seen at the various protests at the World Social Forum)?
This short-term course (the first of its kind anywhere in India at
the undergraduate level) will try to help us understand the trajectory
of development that India has chosen since the 1990s.
This course will address broadly the following questions:
-
What
is
globalization
and
liberalization?
-
What
was
the
trajectory
of
development
in
India
during
the
period
1950-1990?
-
What
has
been
the
new
path
of
development
since
1990?
-
What
are
the
opportunities
and
challenges
facing
the
Indian
economy
in
a
globalised
world?
The course will assume that the student has no training in Economics but the medium of instruction will be English.
Eminent economists from all over India will deliver about half of the lectures.
