ECAC Societies

The Extra Curricular Activities Committee, in keeping with the manifesto of Ramjas College encourages students to step beyond the confines of textbooks. The ECAC provides a forum for the intellectual, creative and cultural development of students. The dynamic presence of the extra curricular activities in Ramjas can be seen and felt on the premises of the college until late in the evening with the band practicing in the auditorium, the Dramatics Society rehearsing in the lawns and posters being made for events by the Fine Arts Society in the corridors.

The ECA Committee endeavours to bring together all those who share an interest in music, dance, drama, and fine arts or in the literary modes of expression. Students, who fulfil the minimum criteria of admission set up by the University, are admitted to the College, on the basis of their proven skills in these fields. Students of the College (i.e. those not admitted through the ECAC) are also encouraged to enrol in the ECAC through auditions held in August.

Keeping in mind the varied interests and talent of students, the ECAC has set up the following societies. Each society is managed and run by the students’ body, with teachers only in an advisory role.

1. Backbeat – the Music Society has skilled vocalists and instrumentalists. The College Band ‘Zingaro’ has performed on AIR and Delhi Doordarshan.

2. In Step – the Choreography Society invites students skilled in classical and modern dance.

3. Shunya – the Dramatics Society puts up stage as well as street plays. Their performances have been well received. The society has to its credit a 20-minute short film called ‘Commitment’ - scripted, directed and produced by its members. Shunya also has an active Mime Society.

4. Expressions - the Literary Society has separate literary and debating sections.

The Literary Society encourages writers, poets and has organized prose reading and recitation sessions. It brings out a wall magazine and has published a journal ‘The Flowing Quill’ this year. The Society also has a Writers’ Club, which meets regularly and has formed a blog (www.literallyexpressed.blogspot.com) where their creative works are displayed. The Debating Society has a team of outstanding debaters who have won many accolades for the College. The Society organized ‘Polemic’, an inter college parliamentary debate competition for the first time this year. The Society hopes to develop the event as a prominent and lasting fixture in the debating calendar of the University.

Expressions also has an active Quizzing Society.

5. Vibgyor – the Fine Arts Society is a platform for painters and crafts persons. Its members have won competitions held in Delhi University and outside. The Society organizes workshops on pottery, handicrafts etc. which are open to all students of the college. Each Society of ECAC organizes an intra as well as inter-college festival through the academic session. This includes competitive and informal events. Societies also organize workshops where experts are invited to give their inputs.
